Weekend Swimming Pool Landscape Projects

November 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Is your swimming pool landscape looking a little blah, but you can’t find time to for a major makeover? Even if all you have is a few hours this weekend, there’s still a lot you can do to make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of your pool.

Build a Raised Garden Bed

If you have an area near your pool that’s too close for most plantings, but you don’t want to pave it, a raised garden bed could be the idea solution. You get the benefit of greenery near the pool, but the wall of the bed will keep debris like dirt and rocks from finding their way onto your patio.

Revamp Your Paths

The path between your pool area and your house takes special consideration for several reasons. If you have kids, they’re bound to run down the path in barefoot no matter how many times you tell them to put on their flipflops and walk.

If you swim after dark or host pool parties, well, the combination of wet shoes, dim lights and a slippery path is something best avoided. This is why you want to plan your path with the same consideration you did your pool deck or patio when it comes material and lighting. Consider upgrading your paths and walkways with a better surface material or attractive path lighting.

Install an Arbor

An arbor or pergola draping in climbing vines is an attractive and easy way to set off the entrance of your pool area. Take the design a set further by setting matching planters or statues on either side of the arbor. If the idea of an arbor over the entrance doesn’t appeal to you, set one up against a wall or fence to create a niche for a statue or other decor item.

Add a fountain or waterfall

Fountains and pools naturally go together and they’re a must if you’re going for the tropical or rainforest look. Soothing sound of running water makes to pool area that much more tranquil. The cheapest and easiest method is to install a floating fountain that attaches to your pool pump. Another option is a waterfall that sits on the pool’s edge and sends cascades of water directly into the pool. For these, high end models can cost up to $2000, but you can find simpler models for less than $200

Even a small weekend project can do a lot to enhance your swimming pool landscape. Whether you have just 10 minutes to install a floating fountain or a whole afternoon to rework your paths and walkways, investing a little time sprucing up your swimming pool landscape can make the area look and feel more like the luxury it’s suppose to be.
